Best Time To Visit Bondi: Day Or Night?

When you see a picture of Bondi Beach you don’t have to ask where it is because you are immediately aware that this is one of the best beaches in Australia. It is the perfect destination for those who love the beach and the ocean, and those who want to take part in some water sports.

The name Bondi comes from the aboriginal word for ‘the noise of waves crashing on the rocks’. While the aboriginal community probably did not go in for much surfing, it is clear that the waves on this beach have always made an impact on the locals.

Today the beach is the site of the oldest surf life saving hubs in the world which was formed in 1907. The Bondi Surf Life Saving Club is dedicated to protecting the people who visit this famous beach every day. The work that they do keeps people safe all year round and they work very hard.

However, the day that will go down in history as being one of the hardest is the day that is known as ‘Black Sunday’. On 6th February 1937 over 300 people had to be rescued by the club when huge waves at the beach took a lot of swimmers by surprise. Five people sadly lost their lives that day but without the efforts of the Life Saving Club this number could have been a lot higher.

There was a tram that people could take down to the beach which used to run until 1961. This tram was almost as famous as the beach and was the most popular way to get down to the beach. Today there are coaches that run every day and in the summer these coaches are often full to capacity so it is advisable to get there early.

There is also car parking available but again this fills up quite quickly. As many as 40,000 people can visit the beach every day in the height of the summer. There is always a festival atmosphere on the beach and it is still somewhere that people go to relax even though there are so many other people around.

Even though the summer is the busiest time of the year for visitors to the beach, it is still a popular destination all year round. Surfers take part in their sport even in the winter and although the water is cold you will still see plenty of people braving the icy water. If you prefer to stay dry then you may find that the weather is warm enough to sit down and relax, depending on the time of year that you visit. If you want to stay active there are some walking trails along the beach that give some great views of the coast.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants along the beach that really come to life at night. This makes Bondi beach a popular destination in the evening as well as during the day. Every sort of entertainment is catered for in the area around the beach so you are sure to find something that suits your tastes.

Many people who visit Sydney include a trip to Bondi as part of their plans for the trip. If you want to stay in this part of the city then there are lots of options for accommodation that will suit every budget. You will find everything from backpacking hostels to five star hotels here so you really do have a lot of choice.
